Training & Development Policy

Introduction

Shape’s success in meeting its corporate objective depends largely on the abilities of its staff.  To this end it has pledged to train and develop a highly skilled and motivated workforce, recognising it must provide a wide and varied range of training and development opportunities to meet the corporate, specialist and individual needs of its staff.

Training Review

The training and development needs of all staff are reviewed at regular intervals.  This is normally linked to the Appraisal interviews, where the employee and manager review the employee’s performance.  Strengths and weaknesses are highlighted and any training and development need are noted.

The training and development activities required to reach the corporate objectives are reviewed annually.  The review covers all employees and makes specific reference to:

    • Core skills required for the job.
    • Any training required by the employee to fulfil the job requirements.
    • Any development needs identified as the result of a performance shortfall.
    • Any corporate training initiatives, e.g health and safety, equal opportunity awareness.
    • Any development activities required to enhance performance and future promotion opportunities.
    • The employee training and development process conforms to the spirit and intent of the Equal Opportunities Policy and current legislation.

    Induction

All new staff will be fully inducted to ease the “settling in” period.

Professional, Technical and Administrative Qualification Courses

    1) Day Release Courses

Staff may be granted facilities for day-time attendance at classes leading to a professional, technical or administrative qualification, appropriate to the employee’s duties.

    2) Short Non Qualification Courses and Conferences

Employees are encouraged to attend courses and conferences, which will equip them for better performance of their existing or possible future responsibilities.

If, during the course of your employment, you become aware of a training requirement that is part of the job requirement (or due to legislation or relevant regulations) you are required to request such training to your line manager.
